Sadya: Everyday Expressions

What is it about?

Sadya (sad-YAH, Ilonggo, Cebuano: happy ; sad-YA^, Tagalog: intentional) is a once a month “happily intentional” Filipino conversation practice which aims to be organized from an anti-racist and anti-oppressive, feminist, queer, healing-centred engagement, and decolonization lens. By using the word sadya and the different meanings of the word across Philippine languages, this choice positions the inclusive and contested nationalisms approach of this conversation circle.

Theme: Everyday Expressions

Participants will use everyday expressions in their daily conversations to connect with Filipino speakers in a more authentic way. Whether it’s a simple request, a casual interjection, or words of encouragement, they can practice commonly-used phrases for a more natural and meaningful interaction.

Meet your facilitators

Lani Lirio, CTDP

She is passionate about sparking meaningful dialogue and inspiring collaboration in the workplace, which inspired her to launch Bright Mango Consulting. Together with her husband, their three children, and their two dogs, she continues to live with courage and build wonderful memories in beautiful Niagara.

Lani was born and raised in Valenzuela, where she grew up playing habulan, taguan, and lutu-lutuan with her cousins in their family backyard. Tagalog is her first language and speaks some Bisaya.

Her journey in Canada started 18 years ago.

She has worked for several organizations delivering leadership training, team-building sessions, and self-awareness workshops.

Criselda

Born and raised in Makati, Philippines, Criselda came here in 2000, and has lived in Hamilton ever since. Criselda received my Honours Bachelor of Commerce from McMaster University. They work for a non-profit organization that manages the cafeterias, retail shops and parking services at some of the Hamilton hospitals. They can speak, write and understand fluent Filipino and hope to help those who are trying to learn the language by providing guidance and assistance with any questions they might have, so please ask away! Tara na! They enjoy going on local trails in the area, and discovering new places here and abroad. On their spare time, I like to bake and learn how to make more Filipino desserts. They also enjoy collecting new plants and spending time with their two free-roam bunnies, Pepay and Popoy.
